Let's see now, where were we... Oh yeah, we were
just leaving Casey's in Herndon for the VFW... The group leaving Casey's was a
little larger and included one bike from the group I left Crossroads with, the
yellow Dyna I think it is... Anyway, we rode out with them but after getting on
the freeway Carlton decided to blow the carbon out of the pipes, (or something
like that) and we kind of left the others behind... though I'm sure any one of them
could have done the same or better... There is one shot in my right mirror that
if you look closely the left feet of two riders are visible, the first behind
the white truck. The second is behind what looks to be an SUV behind the first
rider. Long story short we got to the VFW for the
Tri-tip feed and other activities set for the day.
As ever, while you're here you may want to check out my other pages with Biker

-The Old Man
So, after a short ride we arrived at the VFW. The picnic area in the back is very nice, shaded, with a bandstand. I took some shots of the bikes and folks there before the festivities got started.
Now for the facility and festivities. Not knowing many of the folks I tried not to be intrusive so, many of the photos may be from a little bit of a distance. As the day progressed I became more at ease and so some of these are closer. Additionally, out of respect I did not record the "Posting of the Colors" which included the playing of the National Anthem and Taps by the bugler. Then it was time to start eating and the food was delicious!
I finished my meal and saw that some more bikes had arrived since I made my first trip around the lot so I took a moment to shoot them..
Now for the Weenie Bite... First the technicians calibrate the assembly as additional contestants are sought. The first trial runs are made and it is clear that further calibration is necessary. After that the contestants all took their shot, they were even offered a second try which some emphatically declined. However, there was a tie and so a "sudden death bite-off" was required to determine the true Weenie Bite Champion.

After the winner was declared the focus shifted to the raffle tickets as some prizes were raffled off while the band "Rare Breed" set up. There is a shot of my tickets... all losers... ha! ha! But as the pictures show, there were many winners of some very nice prizes.
Next came the Slow Putt contest. There were three heats of two then a final heat of three and Mel won on his 1958 BMW 250cc shaft drive. (He says that it has been bored out so it's a bit more than 250...)
Next came the band, Rare Breed. They played some very familiar songs... Kind of made me wish I had brought the old Strat along...
as I wandered around to catch a couple more bikes.
Then, while the band was takin a break the trophies for Weenie Bite and Slow Putt were awarded and Mel got one for each event.
At this point we're going to start a 3rd page... see ya' there!
